Creating safe and accessible routes for children walking or biking to school is a priority for communities across Oregon, and Lancaster Mobley has been proud to support this effort through several Safe Routes to School projects.

Stayton – Shaff Road & N Gardner Avenue

In Stayton, our team worked on the analysis and design for a key crossing improvement near a local school. While the project was initially envisioned as a pedestrian hybrid beacon (HAWK signal), coordination with Marion County, the City of Stayton, and the local school district led to the selection of a Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB) as the most appropriate treatment.

Designing this facility required careful consideration of multiple factors: providing space for groups of children to wait safely, avoiding conflicts with the adjacent multi-use path, accommodating turning movements into and out of the school driveway, and ensuring RRFB equipment could be installed without obstructing visibility. The result is a safer, more functional crossing tailored to the site’s unique challenges.

Salem – Four Corners Elementary School

Further north in Salem, Marion County received a Safe Routes to School grant for improvements along Elma Avenue and the frontage of Four Corners Elementary School. Lancaster Mobley contributed traffic signal designs, permanent signing and pavement markings, and temporary traffic control plans to support the project.

Key upgrades include sidewalk and ADA improvements, as well as an RRFB and enhanced pedestrian crossing at State Street and Elma Avenue, providing students with a safer option to cross this busy urban arterial. Together, these improvements enhance safety and accessibility for children and families walking to and from the school.

Building Safer Connections

Both projects demonstrate how Safe Routes to School investments translate into tangible safety improvements for students and the broader community. Lancaster Mobley’s role in analyzing, designing, and coordinating these crossings reflects our commitment to making everyday travel safer and more accessible for people of all ages.
